ABSTRACT

Two of the greatest concerns in national and international public health are the diabetes and depression. Each of these pathologies has around 10% prevalence in the economic active community. These considerations lead to important decrease on patients’ quality of life and health. That means social and economic repercussions. These pathologies usually are treated by different clinicians, which frequently do not make a good evaluation of the comorbidity between them. This means that treatment use is focused only on one of them. There is an important lack of knowledge about the antidepressant treatment for these patients. In the international literature there is no evidence for a first choice antidepressant treatment for the diabetic patient. So is a clinicians need to know the differences between the different antidepressant families and their secondary effects. In this article we review the literature about comorbidity between depression and diabetes. We analyze the importance of knowing the relation between them. Finally, we show the options for different treatments focusing the diabetic patient needs.
