ABSTRACT

Introduction. In many urban regions of Mexico there still exists an unfounded fear towards scorpions. The objective of this study was to determine the scorpion fauna in Merida, Yucatan, Mexico, and to describe the phenology and medical importance of the species found.
Material and Methods. The specimens were collected or obtained by donations from 1992 to 1998. The entomological material collected was determined and deposited at the Coleccion Entomologica Regional Facultad de Medicina Veterinaria y Zootecnia, Universidad Autónoma de Yucatán.
Results and Conclusion. An total of 107 adult scorpions belonging to two families and four species Centruroides gracilis; C. ochraceus (Buthidae) and Diplocentrus sp1 and sp2 (Diplocentridae) were collected, none of them highly toxic species. A high relative abundance period was observed between March and July.
