ABSTRACT

The main objective of the current report is to summarize the therapeutical experience with different surgical techniques for chronic dacryocystitis at the Ophthalmology Service of the Hospital General de México Materials and methods: A retrospective, close, longitudinal, non-randomized study was done. The files of subjects from 2000 to 2007 with the diagnosis of dacryocystitis were analyzed and divided into three groups according to their clinical variety: simples, with fístulization and with previous nasolacrimal duct obstruction surgery. External techniques of dacryocystorhinostomy or dacryocystectomy with or without mytomicine were performed and had a follow-up period of six months. Results: 194 subjects were included, 156 were females and 38 were males. A total number of 222 surgeries were done. The number of simple dacryocystitis were 194; 14 had fístulization and 14 had a previous nasolacrimal duct obstruction surgery. An external technique of dacryocystorhinostomy was performed in 122, 9 of the simple variety and 9 with nasolacrimal duct obstruction previous surgery. Conclusions: Females were more affected with the simple variety of dacryocystitis and the external dacryocystorhinostomy was the most frequent surgical technique performed. In all subjects results were satisfactory in the follow-up period.
