ABSTRACT

In the past few years, the economic aspect has been integrated, as a fundamental part, to the planning and operation of the health services.
The epidemiological information in our country enhances demographic growth, greater life expectation and an increase in the percentage of people over 60 years old, which leads to a high cost increase for health care. As a result, medical-economic studies are needed for the proper grounding of the decision making regarding the treatment or programs that comply with the proposal, at the lowest possible cost.
The different methods of medical-economic analysis are being analyzed as well as the characteristics of Mexico’s General Hospital, with a projection to the future. A cost system has been implemented in the same hospital, which aim is the efficient use of the public resources and more transparency in their application, in order to be able to instrument policies for the optimization of resources and to contribute to a proper decision making. In addition, it will be the basis for cost development per operation in each one of the services.
Through the cost-benefit method, the first results of weekend surgery schedules (short stay), utilization of neuroradiosurgery (gamma rays) and medical care to patients with HIV/AIDS are presented.
