ABSTRACT

A bibliographical review focused on the maternal mourning due to perinatal death is performed, in order to understand a devastating event for parents and particularly for the mother, for the loss of the child. It also describes the emotional adaptive changes within women during and after pregnancy and frustrations of motherhood, which involves the loss. The mourning process must be understood through the various stages that characterize it, and that can manifest in a linear manner or behave as a dynamic process changing from one phase to another. In these circumstances, a health professional’s approach is important and should be based on a relationship of empathy with the grieving mother, which encloses ethical, philosophical and sociological connotations that should be taken into consideration in any management of health. For mothers in this situation, it is useful to have self-help or support groups in order to overcome this tragic experience and in turn, allow them to interact and be supported by other mothers who have had the same experience.
