Clinical profile of chronic sinusitis in children

ABSTRACT

Objective: To find out the clinical profile of chronic sinusitis in children. Design: Restrospective, descriptive, transversal and observational study. Materials and methods: 74 charts of pediatrics patients with diagnosis of chronic sinusitis admitted to Pediatric Service at General Hospital of Mexico were reviewed. Results: 60.8 % were males, preschool children were more frequently found. Clinical manifestation was characterized by: nasal obstruction (85.1%), rhinorrea (79.7%), sneeze (72.9%) and cough (70.2%). Total eosinophil count was increased in 17.5 % and presence of nasal eosinophils (> 5%) was in 24.3%. Chest radiograph showed increase in tracheobronchial tree in 37.8%. Opacification of maxilar sinus and the association between opacification of maxilar and ethmoid sinus was present in 78.3% and 17.5% respectively. Allergy rhinitis and asthma were found in 33.2% and 31 % of the patients. Finally they were treated before at the admition with antibiotics (98.5%) antihistaminics and local vasoconstrictors (27%). Conclusions: This study show us the clinical profail of chronic sinusitis in one group of patients whose were attended in one hospital of reference, by this reason we can not it applicated the results in all children, although we can begin to make aware in the diagnostic of this problem in family doctors, general practitioners and other consultants.

  3. El cuadro clínico comparte signos y síntomas con las vías aéreas inferiores, en especial con el asma, con la que puede asociarse.

  4. La eosinofilia sanguínea y la cuenta incrementada de eosinófilos nasales puede apoyar el diagnóstico de sinusitis.

  5. Las radiografías de tórax y senos paranasales siguen siendo útiles en el abordaje diagnóstico.

  6. Es muy alto el porcentaje de pacientes con tratamientos previos de antibióticos.
