Current state of hand-assisted laparoscopic surgery of the colon and rectum

ABSTRACT

Objective. To analyze the current status of the hand-assisted approach. Setting: Third level health care centers. Design: Review article. Methods: A search was performed on hand-assisted surgeries in the Medline and PubMed databases covering the years from 1991 to 2008. Its safety, surgical time, and conversion index were compared with the assisted laparoscopic approach. Results: A total of 37 related articles were found; of them, 10 corresponded to descriptive studies, 5 were non-randomized, 7 were randomized, and 1 corresponded to a metaanalysis. Conclusion: The hand-assisted approach is one more tool for the surgeon, allowing him to be better equipped to perform a procedure laparoscopically.
