ABSTRACT

Neuroendocrine tumors may arise from a wide range of organs and may occur in various locations in the body. These tumors arise from amine precursor uptake and decarboxylation (APUD) cells and are referred to as APUDomas. They include carcinoid tumors, paragangliomas (pheochromocytomas), medullary thyroid carcinomas, and islet cell tumors of the pancreas. APUD cells secrete a wide range of substances, including insulin, gastrin, glucagon, vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP), pancreatic polypeptide, and somatostatin. In this article the authors focus on 6 cases of carcinoid tumor, with a review of the literature and the radiologic and pathologic appearances of ileal and appendicular carcinoids presented.
