Bilateral hernia and laparoscopy. A different focusing

ABSTRACT

It is difficult to know the exact percentage of bilateral hernias in adults, although the reports show a significant increase especially with laparoscopy. Actually, we know that the bilateral repair can be done simultaneously without increasing the recurrence rate, specially if a tension-free technique is used. Laparoscopic hernioplasty has been shown to be effective in the early detection of contralateral defects providing a less invasive approach than traditional surgery in which either with sequential or with simultaneous procedures two separate incisions are required, without increasing significantly operative time or morbidity with the advantages of less pain and early recovery. It is important that surgeons have in mind that although the common presentation of patients is with a unilateral hernia, the frequency of bilateral hernia is high and it is advisable to comment with the patients this possibility and to explore both sides specially under certain conditions that may rise suspicion of a more complex case.
