ABSTRACT

Purpose: To assess the safety and efficacy of conductive keratoplasty (CK) in the treatment of presbyopia. Methods: Twenty three presbyopic patients underwent unilateral CK in the non-dominant eye to improve their near vision. They were emetropic or had low to mild hyperopia. Mean age was 51.17 years (range: 40 to 61 years). The surgeries were performed by the same surgeon. The refractive change target for these eyes was -1.75 diopters. Results: Preoperative mean manifest refraction spherical equivalent (MRSE) was +0.96 D (range:-0.50 to +2.00 D), six months after CK, the mean near UCVA was J2 (range: J1 to J5), with 3 cases (12.5%) with J1, 15 cases (62.5%) with J2 or better and 21 (95.8 %) with J3 or better, 2 cases (8.6%) con J5. The mean MRSE correction was -2.12 D (range: -1.75 to -2.50 D). Eighteen patients (78.2%) had binocular distance UCVA of 20/20, 21 cases (91.3%) had binocular UCVA of 20/25 or better and 23 cases (100%) had binocular UCVA of 20/30 or better. We had 1 case of under correction and 1 case of regression. Conclusions: Conductive keratoplasty for the treatment of presbyopia provided safe and effective results 6 months following the initial surgery. Longer follow-up will be needed to describe refractive stability.
