ABSTRACT

Mental Disorders have a great impact in the lives of patients, families, and the society as a whole. It is estimated that more than 20% of the global population will suffer any affective disorder throughout their lives and will require medical treatment. In Mexico, Frenk et al, estimated that neuropsychiatric disorders occupy the fifth place of the global burden of disease (premature death and years lived with disability). These authors established that 4 out of the 10 most disabilitating diseases are neuropsychiatric disorders: schizophrenia, depression, obsessive compulsive disorder, and alcoholism. In 2020, depression will become the second cause of years of life lost globally. Incorporating economic analysis in clinical and epidemiological studies has become more frequent recently. The objectives of this article are to: define economic concepts such as health economics, costs, effectiveness, efficacy, and utility, establish a general view regarding costs and disability associated with the treatment of the most prevalent mental disorders, and review the most cost effective strategies for their treatment.
