Assessment of albendazole treatment against ovine lungworms in North-West Spain

ABSTRACT

Monthly larval excretion was studied for a year in two groups of Galician-breed sheep naturally infected with lung nematodes, and kept under a continuous grazing pattern in the North-West of Spain. Half of the animals were treated orally once a month with 5 mg/kg of body weight of albendazole and the other half remained untreated as the control group. Protostrongylidae species identified were: Neostrongylus linearis, Muellerius capillaris and Cystocaulus ocreatus, N. linearis was identified in 98.9% of the samples with first-stage larvae; with lower percentages for M. capillaris (13.6%) and C. ocreatus (9.6%). After a year of treatment, the reduction in the percentage of total number of protostrongylid larvae was 86.4%, with a higher percentage for N. linearis (88.4%) and lower percentages for C. ocreatus (62.6%) and M. capillaris (45.7%).
