Introduction The following comments are based upon the author’s interpretation of references that are cited, together with his experience of over 40 years in the administration of anesthetics. While they will undoubtedly seem fanciful and unrealistic to many practitioners, in the author’s opinion it is possible in most cases to provide an ideal anesthetic inexpensively by using a combined regional-general anesthetic method. Our goal as anesthesiologists is to alleviate pain and the focus of this lecture is to emphasize techniques that achieve this purpose.
