ABSTRACT

Medical planning of hospitals and clinics of the Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social (IMSS) began in an empirical manner in Mexico City in 1944. Since this time, the IMSS has created a vast system of medical units that covers the entire country of Mexico. Its characteristics related to dimensions, location, equipment, and installations have obeyed humanistic and technical criteria, medical needs of users, policies of the IMSS, costs, and the advances of science and technology. At present, it is possible to say that there exists a Mexican medical school of hospital and clinic planning based on the IMSS experience.
