ABSTRACT

Objective: To inform on a case of bilateral Grynfeltt hernia, clinical presentation, and treatment. Lumbar hernias are uncommon; antecedents have existed for 300 years and incidence is so low that 300 cases were reported during that lapse. Ac-cording to causal factor, they are congenital or acquired; according to protrusion site, hernias of superior lumbar space (Grynfeltt-Lesshaft), hernias of inferior lumbar space (Petit), and diffuse hernias are generally post-traumatic or post-surgical. The literature reports that 95 % of cases of lumbar hernia affect the superior space; they are generally unilateral and involve fascia, aponeurosis, and muscles. Bilateral hernias are due to a defect in development. Acquired hernias can be spontaneous and among the causes there is direct trauma with compression of the abdomen, as in traffic accidents. A total of 25 % can present incarceration and 10 %, strangulation. The content generally includes fat, intestine, or kidney.
