Flat foot prevalence in children

ABSTRACT

Objective. To know the prevalence of flat foot in children of Morelia City. Material and methods. Six hundred and sixty three children attended to nurseries and primary schools were studied: 163 of them were between 2 to 5 years of age and 500 were from 6 to 12 years. All of them were studied in vertical position in order to take an impression of the sole foots of them. By this way it was possible to study the longitudinal arch of the feet. Results. In preschool and scholar children the prevalence of flat foot it was, in the same order, 31.9 x 100 and 8.8 x 100. In the total sample it was 14.5 x 100. The prevalence rate diminished at the time the age of the children increase, from 48. 1 x 100 in children of the 2 year-old to 2.8 x 100 in those children of 11 years. In preschoolers the diagnosis of flat foot include children with flexible flat foot, particularly when those with overweight. Conclusion. There is an over diagnosis of flat foot in preschool children at foot in preschoolers.
