ABSTRACT

Apheresis Applications Committee of the American Society for Apheresis (ASFA) is responsible for reviewing and categorizing the indications for therapeutic apheresis. This process has being made every seven years since 1986 which resulted in four publications: 1986 (Dr. Harvey Klein editor), 1993 (Dr. Ronald G. Strauss), 2000 (Dr. Bruce C. McLeod) and 2007 (Dr. Zbigniew M. Szczepiorkowski). These publications are also called Special Editions. The 2000 edition (4th special edition), went through significant changes as compared to previous publications. A new concept was introduced; the «Fact Sheet», The Fact sheet provides summarizes, comprehensive information of the use of therapeutic apheresis. Since 2007 ASFA subcommittee has included a systematic review and evidence-based approach to the classification and categorization of indications. This fifth special edition (2010) of ASFA where 59 conditions where included, has continued to improve the process of using evidence-based medicine in the recommendations by improving the category definitions and adding a grade of recommendations that can help implement the ASFA guideline into clinical practice.
