ABSTRACT

Periodic evaluation of growth makes it possible to observe how with a positive change in health and nursing conditions, children’s physical growth levels improve. With the purpose to establish a general vision of nursing conditions of children younger than 5 years of age, a cross-descriptive research was performed at the Pediatric Emergency Room of Social Security Hospital 31; children 5 years of age taken for medical care were randomly chosen; children whose pathology did not allow anthropometry were not included. Age, weight, and height were registered for 237 children who were analyzed, 123 (51.9 %) male and 114 (48.1 %), female. The nutritional status found was normal in 154 (65 %), undernourished 23 (9.70 %), and overweight or obesity in 60 (25.3 %). The undernourished child was found in 9.7% awareness nor differ from reports. Overweight found was in 60/237 (25.3 %), an alarming number because infant obesity continues to adulthood (2.33 times greater) and is a risk factor for chronic diseases. Nutritional vigilance mechanisms should be taken in the child population to prevent obesity.
