ABSTRACT

Objective: To describe a case of Rapunzel syndrome.
Design: Case report.
Setting: University Hospital, Universidad Autónoma de Chihuahua. Chihuahua, Chih. Mexico.
Case report: Young woman, 18-year-old, with an insidious history of early satiation, occasional vomiting, and constipation, which became acute in the last hours before reaching the hospital. Surgery revealed a gastric trichobezoar, reaching the jejunum. Postoperative evolution was eventless. The patient admitted trichotillomania and trichophagia of 13 years evolution.
Conclusion: Trichotillomania is a psychiatric disorder; it is occasionally accompanied by trichophagia. One third of patients with trichophagia will develop a bezoar of clinical relevance. The Rapunzel syndrome is a rare type of trichobezoar.
