ABSTRACT

An observational, prospective, transversal, descriptive study was performed to investigate the incidence of coronal and radicular caries in a geriatric population of 61 patients between 60-90 years of age. The clinical evaluation of coronal caries was obtained using the DMF Index of Klein and Palmer and the radicular evaluation was obtained using the radicular caries index Katz (RCI). Caries is still a public health problem. The DMF of the group was 18.3 (SD ± 7.7). The smallest average of coronal caries was found in the 66.70 age group (15.9 SD ± 8.4) and it increased with age; the DMF in the 81 and older group was 23.0 (SD ± 5). The percentual distribution of radicular caries shows an RCI of 34.4% in the total dentition of this population, and it increased with age as shown by the 100% affected in the 81 and older group. Coronary caries is a primary dental disease, but radicular caries is secondary to the exposure of dental cement through a physiological or senile gingival recession or due to previous periodontal disease. Radicular caries is the most frequent finding in the elderly.
