ABSTRACT
Objective. To know the differences in morbidity and the risk of death in neonates of teenage mothers (aM) in comparison to newborn infants of adult women (AM), in infants attended in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of the hospital.
Material and methods. Information of the newborn infants in 2009 in the hospital from adult women (AW) and adolescent mothers (aW), all of them attended in NICU.
Results. Three hundred and thirty (6.2%) neonates borne in the hospital required attention in the NICU: 51 (15.4%) belonged to adolescent women aW and 279 (84.6%) were the babes of AW. The main causes of admission to the NICU for aW infants were: prematurity, septicemia and respiratory problems. Those babies had an increased risk of complications and mortality.
Conclusions. The main causes of admission of the neonates are: prematurity, septicemia and respiratory problems, and these babies have an increased risk of mortality and complications.
Conclusions. The main causes of admission of RNMa are: prematurity, septicemia and respiratory problems and these babies have increased risk of hospital expenses, mortality and complications.
