ABSTRACT
Elementary formulas are those in which the protein is represented by simple amino acid; semi-elementary formulas are those that nutrients are pre-digested, with a predominance of proteins in a partially hydrolyzed form. They are used in nutrition of children with various gastrointestinal diseases such as malabsorption syndrome, allergy to heterologous proteins from cow’s milk and soy. This review aims to characterize these formulas and clinical indications in children. The study shows a review of articles from authors, legislation and various bases such as Medline and Scielo given on the subject, in English, Spanish and Portuguese in the period 1990 to 2009. We conclude that further studies are needed and clinical protocols for the correct indication of these formulas in the pediatric age group.
