ABSTRACT

Acute diarrhoeal diseases are a world health problem in developing countries like Mexico where E. coli is one of the lead bacteria that produce diarrhoea. Among this enteric infections the pathogenic strains are include the: enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC) as the most common cause in Mexico; enterotoxigenicE. coli (ETEC) is the second cause; enteroinvasive E. coli (EIEC) causes a diarrheal box invasive dysenteric; enterohemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC) is the prototype and the more commonly associated with hemolytic uremic syndrome; enteroaggregative E. coli (EAEC) can be important cause of chronic diarrhea in children and diffusely adherent E. coli (DAEC) recognized as a separate category potentially diarrheagenic. E. coli is apart from the above, an excellent model of study in molecular microbiology, both in the host-microorganism interaction studies, in bacterial genotyping studies as in production and transmission mechanisms of antibiotic resistance factors which is an excellent study tool for the medical community.
