ABSTRACT
Objective. Identify the epidemiological characteristics of the accidents which cause skeletal lesion in children.
Material and methods. The study was carried out from November 1997 to October 1998. The criteria of the inclusion were children of the ages 0 to 14 years, which ad suffered an accident which caused a lesion to the bone and to whom the questionnaire, was applied to. The statistical analysis was simply made up of frequencies.
Results. The rate of accident which caused lesions to the skeletal system was 8.3 out of every 1,000 emergency room visits. March was the month with the largest number, 13.6 out of 1,000 visits to emergency room. There was a marked frequency between the boys and the girls the ratio was 2.4:1. The majority of the accidents occurred in the home (56%). The most frequent accident was at floor level (49%). The time of day for these accidents was between 12:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. The majority of the skeletal lesions affected the superior extremities.
Conclusions. Accidents are frequent cause of skeletal lesions in children. They generally occur in home, being the school boys the most affected. The majority of the accidents which cause skeletal lesions in children could be prevented, by more effective health education.
