It drowning for submersion in children. Inform of 30 cases

ABSTRACT

Objective. In this article we have a purpose of know drowning and near-drowning frequency of pediatrician patients on the Hospital Infantil del Estado de Sonora and too know about the treatment, complications morbidity and mortality during their stoy hospital. Material and methods. We reviewed the record clinical of 30 children that they were received atention by drowning and near-drowning on the hospital since year 1977 to 2000. The variables included, age, sex, month of year, place of accident, if the submersion was in freshwater o salad water, temperature, submersion time, signs and simptoms, immediately treatment and hospitalary treatment, laboratory and radiological features, morbidity, mortality. Results. We have founded 17 male (56.6%) the predominantly age was betwen six months and one year old 73.4%, the months of year October-December 43%, the accident place, was the home in 73.3% cases, the freshwater submersion 90 percent, and the time betwen one to four minutes in 50%. The patients receibed immediately care in the 43% of the cases and only six by paramedic personal. The complications were respiratory distress seizures and one children haven neurologic damage three child death 10%. Conclusions. The hipoxic event after submersion accident can be death and in others cases leave to cerebral plasy; this series showed that below of fifty percent of children received immediatly care, these circunstance almost always influence, the evolution because is it know that immediatly cardiopulmonary resusitation improve the prognosis. In the hospitalary atention is it necessary the establishement of rules for care and provid a guide for the prevent accidents.
