Physical conditioning in geriatric patients with frailty syndrome

ABSTRACT

Objective: To improve the physical and functional performance of geriatric patients with frailty syndrome through a specific physical conditioning program. Methods: Observational, longitudinal, prospective study, made at the HGZ No. 17 of IMSS in Monterrey, N.L. in a sample of 46 patients of both sexes with frailty syndrome, patients had a baseline assessment of physical performance, strength, balance and flexibility. A physical conditioning program that included flexibility, strength and balance exercises was applied. The program last 3 weeks and patients remained with the program at home for 3 months (12 weeks), at the end patients had a final assessment, the statistics package SPSS v.17 was used and obtained data were analyzed with t Student and Wilcoxon tests. Results: At the end of the exercise program patients showed significant improvement p ‹ 0.05 in physical performance, strength, balance and flexibility. Conclusion: The physical conditioning program improved the physical and functional performance of patients with frailty syndrome.
