ABSTRACT

Background: Subperiostic orbital abcesses are a known complication from acute rhinosinusitis. The most frequent surgical procedures for treating this complication are: Lynch-type external approach and, recently, endoscopic approach.
Objective: To establish the differences between external surgical and endoscopic pproaches in patients with subperiostic orbital abcess.
Patients and methods: We performed a 15-year retrospective review of 34 patients with subperiostic orbit abscesses operated at Hospital Español de Mexico.
Results: There was a decreased rate of postoperative complications and abscess recurrence, a shorter surgical time and length of hospital stay with an endoscopic approach compared to the traditional external approach.
Conclusion: Endoscopic approach is effective for the treatment of subperiostic orbital abscesses.
