ABSTRACT

Mirizzi syndrome is a complication of a long standing colelithiasis. It is consider an important but uncommon pathology of gallstones characterized by narrowing of the common hepatic duct due to mechanical compression or inflammation. Preoperative diagnosis of Mirizzi syndrome is complex and a high index of suspicion is necessary to avoid serious complications. Despite the technological and laboratory advances the diagnosis of MS is difficult. Failure to make the diagnosis preoperatively is not likely to present a major problem but the failure to consider the diagnosis intraoperatively may lead to disaster. Diagnosis and choice of operative repair may be best accomplished by open operative techniques. But once the diagnosis is known, successful laparoscopic management as well is possible but care should be taken to avoid duct injury.
