ABSTRACT

Background. Splenic cysts are an uncommon condition and therefore a diagnostic challenge. Medical evidence is obteined only from case series and isolated reports. Objetive. To describe main clinical findings in a patient with giant calcified splenic cyst. Case description. 60-year-old woman, treated at the State Center for Cancer (CECan) Xalapa-Veracruz “MD. Miguel Dorantes Mesa”, with history of diffuse pain located in the left hypochondrium and no history of trauma. Computed tomography shows a well-defined tumor, calcified wall located in the upper left quadrant of the abdomen. A celiotomy with splenectomy were performed without complications. The pathology study revealed a large calcified splenic cyst without epithelial lining. Conclusions. A giant cystic mass with welldemarcated calcified wall, located in the spleen, may suggest the presence of a splenic pseudocyst. We must perform the differential diagnosis with neoplastic and non-neoplastic entities.
