ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION The socioeconomic situation, the sanity conditions, the accessibility, availability and utilization of the food represents vicious circle for developing countries. The Food Bank aim is to support the nourishment of vulnerable families; however, the environment of the individual avoids indirectly the use of nutriments contained in our diet, reverberating in the nutritional status of 5-year-old minors.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the relation among the Indexes of Basic Rural Infrastructure and Housing Condition with the nutritional status of 5-year-old minors who are benefi ciated by the Food Bank in Veracruz. MATERIAL AND METHODS: It was evaluated the nutritional status of 89 children who belong to 187 diff erent families according to the index weightheight from the NCHSOMS. These indexes were determined with arange of 0 to 1, establishing a relation with nutritional status. RESULTS:The Children population sample presented 46 %(41) malnutrition in diff erent degrees, being directly proportional tothe 0.59 obtained at the ICV; however, 20 % of this population presented malnutrition in level 2 and 3 which coincide with those showed in the IIBAR. CONCLUSIONS: The results show that nutritional assistance or orientation as unique support to improve nutritional status of isolated population would fail if minimum needs of social well-being are not atiended fi rst. Therefore, food safety will have effective results when people enjoy a better life quality.
