(Leukocytes count in the gastric fluid in newborn infants: It’s relationship to the time of amniotic membranes rupture)

ABSTRACT

Objective. To evaluate the relationship of rupture of membranes › 12 hours to gastric fluid aspirate in the newborn.
Material and methods. They were carried out smear of gastric juice, obtained by means of aspiration, in 100 newborns to term, with antecedent of rupture of membranes of more than 12 hours, without evidence clinic of infection intraamniotic. They were formed two groups according to the time of rupture of membranes, the Group I with less than 12 hours (control) and the Group II with more than 12 hours. We correlated the values of total leukocytes reported in the hematic biometry, the speed of globular sedimentation and the protein C it reactivates in blood of the umbilical cord.
Results: Significant difference existed among the Group I and the Group II (p ‹ 0.01) in the number of white blood cells in the smear.
Conclusions. The number of white blood cells of the gastric fluid aspirate have equivalent diagnostic utility in neonates with rupture of amniotic membranes. Another blood testing for infection had a low sensitivity for an intrauterine infection for a early evaluation.
