ABSTRACT

We report the case of a female patient 44 years of age that began with: fatigue, weakness, drowsiness, irritability, mild increase undetermined weight, edema of the face and feet. Next, ptosis, diplopia red eye and left eye, accompanied by photophobia. Magnetic resonance reported slightly increased thickness of the eye muscles. Neuromuscular stimulation tests of the orbital muscles showed no abnormalities. However, due to elevated thyroid antibodies underwent total thyroidectomy. The patient remains in hormone replacement therapy. Hashimoto's thyroiditis is a disease with a chronic inflammatory process of autoimmune etiology, with co-existence of proteins similar to the thyroid after a viral infection can trigger the activation of thyroid antigens to specific helper T cells and secretion of anti-thyroid antibodies.
