ABSTRACT
Objective: The purpose of the study was to establish the effectiveness of the rehabilitation treatment using progressive resistive exercises combined with biphosphonates in the spine osteoporosis treatment in postmenopause patients at the Centro de Rehabilitación y Educación Especial Iztapalapa.
Design: Prospective, longitudinal, cuasi experimental, comparative.
Method: Thirty postmenopause patients were included, age from 55 to 75 years old, with spine osteoporosis, divided into two groups 15 patients each: one group receiving daily sodium risedronate only and the other group receiving the same drug plus a program of progressive resistive exercises, the length of the treatment was 3 months both. After treatment a new densitometry was made and compared with the former.
Results: Comparing T Score values of the spine before and after treatment there was not significant difference for the A group whereas we found significant difference for the B group. Final averages from the two groups showed no statistical differences.
Conclusions: The combination between sodium risendronate and exercise program demonstrated effectiveness in treating this kind of patients.
