Is water in your dental unit bacteriologically safe?

ABSTRACT
Objective. To evaluate the bacteriological quality of water in dentist’s offices.
Methodology. 46 dentist’s offices in Mexico City were studied, sampling: triple syringe, flood glasses and water supply, being performed two analysis of total and fecal Coliforms, the dentist answered a questionnaire in order to determine his knowledge about water origin and quality.
Results. Of 46 doctor’s offices 17 presented bacterial pollution, 16 use water from open supply (roof tank/cistern, municipal network); 30 use flush system plus a commercial water brand. Of 16 doctor’s offices with water from open supply, 7 were polluted. Of 30 doctor’s offices with flush system, 10 presented pollution. The water supply in doctor’s offices with higher pollution comes directly from open supply with deficient maintenance of roof tanks/cisterns, the contamination in flood glasses and syringes; indicates an inadequate desinfection. In doctor’s offices with flush system the dentist trusts on the purified commercial water brand but in 7 cases the bottle was already polluted; some dentists use refill bottles causing contamination upon manipulating them. The totality of the dentist do not know the regulations of water quality.
Conclutions. 35% presented bacterial pollution; it is important to watch the water quality supplied on dental units, because if it is inadequate, contaminates the instruments, it is necessary to clean the triple syringe and flood glasses because water makes direct contact with oral cavity structure, blood and saliva of the patient and could cause infectious processes compromising their integral health.
