ABSTRACT

The flaps of perforators described since 1989 have increased steadily in their applications and the vascular areas from which they can be designed. In the thigh, the lateral femoral circumflex artery system has allowed the development of the tensor fasciae latae muscle flaps and anterolateral thigh flap. The purpose of this study is to describe the anatomy of this flap and propose it as the side thigh flap. An anatomical study with 40 dissections in fresh corpse was carried out. We identified 123 perforating vessels in total. The average length of the pedicle was 7.65 cm with a standard deviation of 2.4 centimeters; the external diameter of the perforator vessels varies from 0.8 up to 3 mm with an average of 1.8 mm. In 85% of the dissections, the nutrient vessels the transverse branch of the lateral femoral circumflex artery were identified. 87% of cases identified three or more perforator vessels with a standard deviation of 1.02, and a variance of 5.77, originating from the transverse branch of the lateral femoral circumflex artery. The anatomical record of the perforator and its artery provide a very secure flap.
