ABSTRACT

To determine the perception of a group of elder adults on the functionality of the oral cavity and its ability to chew, swallow and taste foods, a cross-sectional, prospective and associative study was made, with 335 elderly volunteers of both sexes and an average age of 69.9 years. An interview and a clinical evaluation of the oral cavity were conducted. It was found that the perception of taste on foods is associated with the need to eat less or change foods. The perception of taste is related to the feeding of having a dry mouth. Those with the highest levels of education perceived significantly fewer problems in the role of diet in different areas. There were not significant differences in DMF index between men and women. The score of the instrument, the areas of chewing and swallowing and the state of their teeth was related to DMF index. The conclusion is that the status of oral health in this older population was characterized by a high percentage of lost teeth and generally poor oral health that affects their perception of the functionality of feeding.
