ABSTRACT

Introduction: In the human being, the loss of bony mass with the aging is a phenomenon universally known. The human bones decrease in density and increase in porosity as of the third decade of the life. The objective of this study was to describe the mandibular bone changes found on panoramic radiographs.
Materials and methods: 50 panoramic radiographs were measured In the antegonial angle, antegonial depth, and the panoramic index.
Results: The obtained values shows that the thickness of the side of the mandible decreases from 65 years of age, being more evident in women.
Conclusions: The thickness of the cortical bone is proportional to the low bone mass, the age is a big influence in the thickness of the cortical bone, then it is possible that the dentists who has obtained a pano ramic radiographs with treatment intentions, recognize those patients with low bone density.
