Osteonecrosis asociada a bifosfonatos: su influencia en la práctica odontológica

ABSTRACT

Bisphosphonates are analogues of inorganic pyrophosphates, have a high affinity to calcium and are targeted to areas of bone turnover having preferential uptake on the exposed hydroxyapatite actively undergoing bone resorption. Bisphosphonate-related to the osteonecrosis of the jaws (BON) is defined as an exposed bone in the mandible, maxilla or both that persists for at least 8 weeks, in the absence of previous radiation and of metastasis in the jaws.
Recently, investigators have reported cases of BON in the medical and dental literature describing patients with various types of cancer receiving intravenous bisphosphonates to control and treat metastatic bone disease. Additionally, researchers have reported a few cases of BON in patients taking oral doses of alendronate to treat osteoporosis. In this paper, our goal is to educate dentist about the risk of patients undergo bisphosphonate treatment for osteonecrosis of the jaw.
