ABSTRACT

Introduction. There are few studies on the prevalence of anemia in first year College students. In our country, the number of adolescents with anemia is unknown. In this research, 103 cases of anemia out of 3127 university students between the ages 18 and 24 were studied. Objectives. To determine the prevalence of anemia in the students of the “Universidad Veracruzana ”through the Annual Integral Health Exam (AIHE). Materials and methods. A total of 3127 files of the AIHE files were reviewed and analyzed, and they presented low hemoglobin levels, indicative of anemia. Results. The prevalence of anemia in the first-year students, according to the AIHE, was of 3.3% (103 cases). According to the gender, females presented the greater percentage with 96 (93.2%) files with low hemoglobin levels, and the males 7 (6.8%) of the 103 reviewed files. The anemia predominance can be observed in a greater percentage among the 18 year-olds, with 43 cases, followed by 19 year-olds with 23; due to the fact that most of the students that enter university belong to these groups of ages. Conclusions. The prevalence of anemia in the fist year students in the year 2004 was of 3.3%, which indicates that there is not statistical evidence of a health condition to be aware of. Nevertheless, individually it is important to correct it in order to improve the academic performance. The hemoglobin of subsequent AIHE will be monitored
