Prevalence of hyposalivation (Xerostomía) in geriatric patients

ABSTRACT

The saliva is one of the fluids that help to support the health, exist multiple factors that influence the salivary secretion; at the decrease one the mouth cavity is named xerostomia, which favors the deterioration of the mouth health. The xerostomia is not a disease but a sign that they present multitude of reasons, which can be reversible or irreversible, of your identification depends the indicated treatment. Material and Methods: A retrospective study was realized. There were checked the Clinical Histories of geriatric patients; the necessary information was gathered, tests of independence were realized between these variables. Results: There ware checked a whole of 120 processes of this 56 % it was possessing the result of the sialometría, 42 % presented xerostomia, relation man: women of 1:3.7. from the patients with xerostomia, 25 (89 %) presented some systemic disease and 27 (96 %) they were under pharmacological treatment. Discussion: The frequency of xerostomia in adult major patients ranges between 30 and 79 %, the reports indicate us that the patients geriatric are a capable population since on them they converge several of the factors that favor the xerostomia, which is generated to a great extent as response to the use of medicines.
