ABSTRACT

It was proved the association between fluoride ingestion and dental low prevalence of dental caries experience.
Objetive: To study the association between the caries experience, severity of fluorosis and saliva concentration of fluoride in rural area.
Material and methods: A descriptive, Transversal and quantitative study was performed. It was registered the dmft/DMFT, caries experience, fluorosis index, plaque index and fluoride concentration determination using potentiometric ion specific method in saliva, drinking water and from the water supply were performed. Data was analyze by Kruskal Wallis and varianza analysis.
Results: Caries prevalence was about 50%, DMFT/dmft scores were 0.4 and 1.2. Caries experience was low and moderate. The plaque index average was 1.5. F- concentrations from the water supply systems was 9 ppm and 3 pmm in bottled drinking water. Dental fluorosis prevalence was 74% and saliva fluoride concentrations have a variation from 0.1 to 1 ppm.
Conclusions: Significant association between (p=0.08718) caries experience and F- concentration in saliva was found and low caries experience. Saliva F- concentration was higher from reported in previous studies in population with flourinated water (0.016 ppm).
