ABSTRACT
Despite great scientific advances in the field of adhesive materials used in orthodontics, further improvements in the properties of these are needed in order to prevent the formation of white spot lesions. When brackets are debonded white spot lesions are frequently observed. In response to this common problem, researchers and clinicians, and indeed manufacturers, have been working tirelessly to produce adhesive systems with the capacity to release and recharge fluoride ions to protect the enamel surface against the formation of white spot lesions. Furthermore, self-etching primers (SEPs) have now been introduced onto the market. The purpose of this article is to describe the advantages to be obtained from using SEPs in daily orthodontic practice. In this context, scientific evidence drawn from previous studies will be provided to identify the most important properties and contraindications of the aforementioned materials. In general, SEPs produce a more conservative etch pattern on the enamel surface than do conventional methods, can be applied more quickly (thus reducing the risk of contamination with saliva), and also require shorter consultation times.
