ABSTRACT

Introduction: Malignant bone tumours are malignant neoplasias of mesenchymal origin. The most commonly affected sites are the distal femur and the proximal tibia (70%). The most common oncologic cell lines are osteosarcoma, chondrosarcoma, Ewing’s sarcoma and giant cell tumour. They appear during active growth period. The male:female ratio is 2:1. Recently, the most effective treatment is rescue surgery associated to adjuvant chemotherapy, which offers an alternative to amputation and disarticulation up to 85 to 90% of extremities. In medical literature there is no report of a rehabilitation program for this type of patients. Objective: To determine the effectiveness of a rehabilitation program before and after surgery, in patients with rescue surgery. Material and methods: Eighteen patients from the oncologic surgery service of the National Institute of Paediatrics (Mexico), 16 with a diagnosis of osteosarcoma, two with giant cell tumours and Ewing’s sarcoma, respectively. A rehabilitation program before and after surgery was applied. Results: The program showed clinical functional improvement (p ‹ 0.00025). Discussion: The patients with lower extremity tumours had better results than those with upper extremity tumours. The program was applied two weeks prior to surgical act and up to 11 weeks after. The psychological condition has a relevant role. Enneking’s scale is a very useful tool to evaluate functionality. Conclusion: The rehabilitation program, before and after surgery was effective.
