ABSTRACT
Introduction: Myelomeningocele (MMC) is a failure of closing of neural tube, which is associated with a folic acid deficiency, which affects a population of 1.2:1000 alive childbirths in Mexico. The complications are from neurogenic bladder to inability of walking. The treatment must be initiated since birth which will improve the functional prognosis and quality of life. Objective: Determine the epidemiological features of MMC in children under one year of age who were assisted on Instituto Nacional de Pediatria since 1982 to 1999. Methods: 653 files were checked, 181 were with diagnostic of MMC. Results: No predominance of gender. Most cases were from Distrito Federal, states of Mexico, Morelos, Guerrero and Veracruz. Low socioeconomic status in 86.1%. Antecedents discussed were intergenesic period, no planned pregnancy, prenatal control, type of childbirth, surgical treatment and rehabilitative treatment. More frequent levels of neural tube defects were dorsolumbar, lumbosacral and lumbar. Rehabilitation treatment started late. Frequent complications were hydrocephalus, congenital hip luxation and club foot. Conclusion: Each defect of neural tube must be code separately. The MMC approach is not enough. It’s suggested to improve assistance with MMC clinics.REFERENCES
