ABSTRACT

Introduction: Minimally invasive surgery has revolutionized general surgery and colon and rectal surgery is not the exception. Lange in 1991 did a stoma by minimally invasive surgery with good results. Material and methods: We present the experience of two surgical groups in fecal derivative procedures by minimally invasive surgery during 5 years showing its safety, factibility and reproducibility. We operated 132 patients with colorectal disease and included 45 patients to our review of both sexes who required a fecal derivative procedure as a temporary or definitive treatment to their disease. Results: We included 45 patients, 29 women and 15 men, average age 47, range 27 to 81 years old. The procedures done were: 1 double barrel colostomy, 5 end colostomies of transverse colon, 1 end ileostomy, 1 descendent colon stoma, 3 Loop colostomies of transverse, 4 protection ileostomies and 29 loop stomas of sigmoid colon. Conclusions: Minimally invasive surgical procedures for fecal derivation are an additional option for the colorectal surgeon, that we must use to treat our patients if required, if the technological implements are available at our institution.
