ABSTRACT

Background: The rate of occurrence of oral cancer has increased exponentially over the last decade. The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that it is now the sixth most common cause of cancer worldwide. Surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy are treatments associated with clinically significant oral side effects, such as severe oral mucositis, oral candidiasis, xerostomia, ulcers, caries, periodontitis, osteonecrosis and infections; therefore, oral health should be assessed and maintained both prior to cancer treatment and during follow up.
Discussion: Approximately 80% of patients given chemotherapy, experience some kind of oral complication, with almost all of those receiving radiotherapy in the head and neck areas developing some degree of mucositis and oral cavity complication, factors that could potentially compromise the delivery of optimal cancer therapy protocols. Dental and oral care is of extremely importance to ensure that the quality of life of patients is good, both during and after cancer treatment.
All cancer centers should establish a Department of Stomatology to provide assessments, diagnosis and treatment to eliminate and/or minimize the oral complications associated with cancer therapies, within an integrated working relationship and multidisciplinary team approach. The aim of the present paper is to define the role played by the various subspecialties involved in oral health.
Conclusions: Departments of Stomatology should be incorporated into the process of diagnosis and treatment of oncologic diseases.
