ABSTRACT

The design of cavity preparations for teeth that need to be restored has not been suitably adapted in recent years, despite the great advances made in modern dentistry.
Today’s dentistry, dominated by the focus on caries management and faced with an overwhelming choice of restorative materials, is in greater need than ever of modified preparations for use with teeth that are to receive treatment using esthetic restorative materials, in keeping with the same principles for cavity preparations prescribed by G.V. Black, but applying the intellectual wisdom and scientific depth required for each case and specific restorative material.
“The day is surely coming and perhaps within the lifetime of you younger men before me, when we will be engaged in practicing preventive rather than reparative dentistry. When we will so understand the etiology and pathology of dental caries that we will be able to combat its destructive effects by systemic medication”
