Isometric and progressive exercises in postoperated patients of knee arthroscopy.Traditional program versus home rehabilitation program

ABSTRACT
Antecedents: Quadriceps atrophy and hipotonia, pain and swelling interfere in recovery of knee arthroscopy postoperated patients. Strength is lost in 20 to 40% in knee muscles on third week. Some authors report incomplete recovery after four to eight weeks.
Objective: Stablish Home Rehabilitation Program in postoperated patients of knee arthroscopy with an equal or better recovery than traditional program.
Method: Traditional and home programs were evaluated by muscular strength (quadriceps, gluteus and hamstrings), range of motion of the knee, circumferences (10 and 20 cm above patellar superior border, suprapatellar, mediumpatellar and infrapatellar, and 10 cm below the knee) and pain (visual analogue scale). Statistic analysis was made with Student’s t, Fisher test and Mann-Whitney U.
Results: In the first group recovery took place at the fourth week after arthroscopy, and in the second group significant recovery was seen since second week.
Conclusions: Home rehabilitation program of postoperated patient of knee arthroscopy is better and faster than traditional program.
