ABSTRACT
Very few studies have done to predict motor recovery of the thoracic limb and much less on functional hand recovery; preliminary studies with botulinum A toxin are encouraging. The objective of this study is for evaluating botulinum A toxin application and integral rehabilitation treatment in patients with spastic hand secondary to stroke, if it facilitates and improves its function and matching both treatment modalities used in independent way. They were selected of the external consultation of rehabilitation service of the “1o de Octubre” Hospital, ISSSTE. Twenty one patients with stroke antecedent of more than 6 months of evolution that fulfilled the inclusion approaches were divided in three randomized groups; group problem was formed with patients who received botulinum toxin application and were also subjected to handling integral rehabilitatori, being compared at the end of the study with those groups of patients who received such modalities of treatment in an independent way and were evaluated according Ashworth and Brunnstrom’s scales. The obtained results shows significant difference in the evaluations of Brunnstrom’s scale in favor of the group problem (p = 0.017), there was not significant difference between Ashworth’s scale (p = 0.066) in the three groups studied. It was concluded that the botulinum A toxin it is a very important tool that facilitates an appropriate rehabilitation improving the functionality of the affected extremity in smaller time by improving the espasticity.
