Tuberculosis of the sternum. Presentation of one case

ABSTRACT

It is a 2 years 9 months old preschool child who consulted because this mother observed a 5 days of evolution painless tumor located in sternum's manubrium. He also presented 38.5 C fever (axilar) with chills during 2 days. In the physical examination the tumor was described as a 4 X 5 cm mass, bone dependent, painless, no fluctuant, without signs of phlogosis. The tumor was studied by X-ray, CT, MRI several diagnosis possibilities were considered, such as; eosinophilic granuloma, sarcoma, plasmacytoma. Finally, the biopsy reported a chronic granulomatous process with central necrosis compatible with a mycobacterial origen (bone tuberculosis). The treatment was based on rifampin, ethambutol e isoniazid with good response. At the eigth month of treatment, the patient was considered on absolute remission. Conclusion: Bone tuberculosis of sternum is a rare form presentation that should be considered in the differencial diagnosis of this kind of tumors.
